Don Dilworth, President, is the author of the SYNOPSYS lens design program.

Here is an array of small aspheric lenses.
SYNOPSYS has an unmatched ability to model unusual edge geometry.
Combine several systems to check for clearances.
See the beam emerging from a YAG crystal.
See your system in the SketchPad™, where you can change anything with a slider.
Examine the properties of a selected glass type.
Create 3-D stereo views of your lens system, either with image pairs or with red-blue anaglyph glasses.
Here is a lens with a buried ghost image.
Examine wavefront quality anywhere in the system
SYNOPSYS has unmatched graphical output.
Display a selected glass map, showing acid sensitivity, cost, and much more.
Model an array of light sources, with …
… or without individual lenses.
Prepare mechanical drawings of your elements, including prisms.
The tolerance program BTOL can automatically prepare data for assembly drawings.
This mode colors the elements according to the index and dispersion of the glass.
See which colors go where in the diffraction pattern.
An array of LED sources with cone reflectors.
The graphical system summary can document your design.
Solid models that you can spin around on the monitor.
Evaluate image quality with the Air Force resolution target.
A system with an unusual filter wheel.
Combine two systems on a single drawing, showing common components.
One of many forms of image analysis, this shows the diffraction pattern through focus.
This is an example of a non-rotationally-symmetric NURBS surface.
One of eight forms of ghost-image analysis.
See rays in a spot diagram in the visual color of the light.
Evaluate the forward scattering from a lens.

OSD, Inc. has extensive experience with nearly every kind of optical system, including instrumentation, astronomical, illumination, night-vision, infrared, eyepieces and more. Let our expertise solve your design needs quickly and efficiently.
  • Concept development
  • Detailed lens design
  • Tolerance budget
  • Performance analysis, including diffraction effects and tolerance budget influence via Monte-Carlo analysis
  • New lens systems automatically fitted to the testplate list of your preferred vendor, to reduce tooling costs
  • 2920 stock lens elements from all major vendors in our online catalog, automatically fit into your lens if possible, to save production cost.
  • The SYNOPSYS lens design program, written by Mr. Dilworth, can optimize a lens in seconds that would take hours on other programs, using the PSD algorithm.  This reduces the time and expense needed to complete your design project.

In 2008, Mr. Dilworth gave a Colloquium talk at the Optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona.  This talk was titled

Lens Design, 40 Years On:  Where we Were, Where we Are, How we Got There.

This talk gives a concise review of the field of computer-aided lens design for the last 40 or so years.
